Prior to 1972, local speedway events were held at the Tolga Racecourse, but frequent flooding made the track hazardous. To solve this, the Mareeba Motor Racing Club and Mareeba Motorcycle Club led by local figures including Max Holden founded the Mareeba Speedway Club. Volunteers built a dedicated track at Kerribee Park on land subleased from the local rodeo club, utilizing donated heavy machinery and materials. The track became a major hub for North Queensland motorsport. Over the decades, it welcomed Sprintcars, Formula 500s, Sedans and various junior divisions, becoming a stepping stone for regional racing talent.
