Cairns Speedway, Arthur Strike Park

In 1964, the newly formed Cairns Competition Car Club began holding street car and stock car races on the inside track at Cannon Park Racecourse. Local racers utilized this setup until October 1973 as demand grew for a dedicated, permanent motor racing complex. In 1976, the club secured a long-term lease on 17 acres of land in the Edmonton area south of Cairns from the Mulgrave Shire Council. Supported by federal funding and local business donations, the new venue officially opened in December 1976 under the banner of the Cairns International Motor Speedway. Around the early 2000s, the speedway complex was named Arthur Strike Park Raceway in honour of local club icon and contributor Arthur Strike. The broader complex also expanded to host neighbouring disciplines, such as the Cairns & District Kart Club and the Cairns Motorcycle Club's dirt track. Now managed by the North Queensland International Motor Racing Association (NQIMRA Inc.), Cairns Speedway features a banked dirt/clay oval. It is famous for marquee regional meets such as Thunder in the Canefields, hosting everything from 360-LS Sprintcars and Wingless Sprints to Modified Sedans, Formula 500s, and Junior division racing under Speedway Australia sanctioning.
