Westmead Speedway operated as a popular half-mile dirt track racing venue at the Parramatta Showground. As Sydney's urban sprawl pushed westward in the 1950s, promoters identified the old Parramatta Showground—located around Hawkesbury and Darcy Roads—as an ideal venue for motorsport. Westmead was unique because it ran primarily on Sunday afternoons during the winter months, offering a complementary schedule to the famous Sydney Showground Royale, which dominated summer Saturday nights. By the late 1960s, the track faced dual pressures from urban development and safety concerns. The track held its final race meeting on 28 September 1968. The day ended in tragedy when a young Speedcar driver, Ted Fluett, was involved in a fatal crash.
